Ecosistema digitale per la cultura della Regione Campania

Sistema Informativo Culturale – Move to Cloud

The Campania Region has identified among its policy guidelines the promotion, enhancement of cultural goods and the digital revolution through the creation of the Ecosistema digitale per la cultura, an innovative web platform dedicated to the extraordinary cultural heritage of Campania. The immersive experience, which is its mainstay, allows to enjoy the richness of the landscape and cultural heritage of the Region.

The project enshrines the alliance between cultural tradition and innovative technology, catalogues, inventories, guides, descriptive information sheet, microfilms and microfiches, submerged digital heritage, CD-ROM, pdf files, different formats images etc.. This and much more will be the basis from which to draw for a huge amount of processed information: cultural Linked Open Data (LOD) store in the cloud and Big Data available online.

The Ecosystem, in its final version, will not be a simple database: rather, it will be a complex Data Lake that will allow access to data, correlation and sharing. The added value will lie in the innovative approach of data insertion, in their semantic correlation, in the shared descriptive standards, in the technological tools based on the principle of interoperability. The research carried out will no longer be limited to individual types of analysis, but will allow access to all the information available on a given topic, regardless of the source that generated it. Each element, in fact, is associated with an identifier and a set of metadata that qualify it, so the Data Lake will return as a result all the data related to the object of each single search. For example, if a user has to search for information about the Architect Domenico Fontana (1543 – 1607), a single query will enable him to access all the information available in the system, i.e. digital images, videos, documents, books and even events dedicated to that subject (conferences, exhibitions, presentation of volumes, etc..).

This approach, in application of the The Digital Growth Strategy and the Three-Year Plan for ICT in Public Administration, redefines the way in which culture will be experienced on the regional territory by operators and users. The accessibility of cultural heritage is also designed for people with disabilities. Art will be experimented through the involvement of the senses, intelligent and interactive paths will be defined and culture will become smart thanks to IoT (Internet of Things) sensors, augmented reality and virtual reality in the cloud.

In its complete version, it will be possible to access to the Atlante del Cinema in Campania, to the Mediateca dello Spettacolo, as well as to the Centro Regionale per i Beni Culturali della Campania, and the heritage made available by museums, archaeological parks, archives and libraries of the territory for the development of the system, with a view to future collaborations. Through the Ecosystem, the Campania Region strengthens a solid network of relationships and it can dialogue, through interoperability, with the national systems of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities.

The project is based on the principle of inclusiveness and it aims to stimulate the birth of the regional Open Data community of culture as well as to promote information, also according to the bottom up approach.

The Region, in line with the development of the Digital Agenda, an integral part of the Europe 2020 Strategy and ROP Campania ERDF 2014 - 2020 – Axis II, aims to achieve some relevant objectives. The main fields of action are: technology and culture, enhancement of the territory, services for citizens, attempting to avoid the flight out of the region of the best talents and for smart, sustainable and inclusive development.

Atlante del Cinema in Campania - Mediateca dello Spettacolo
The cultural excellence of Campania is also expressed through the sector of cinema and theatre performance. With the project Move to cloud, the Fondazione Film Commission della Regione Campania and the Fondazione Campania dei Festival, together with other project partners, will create an open dataset that includes the activities of this sector. The intervention will facilitate:
  • activities of collection, conservation, enhancement of the theatrical heritage of regional interest;
  • the promotion of study activities and sectoral research;
  • the safeguarding, dissemination and enhancement of audiovisual and photographic heritage, film and audiovisual heritage of regional interest.
The platform is developed through the migration to the cloud of the materials already available and will be increased with further data acquisition. It can be used for innovative experiments such as the creation of virtual tourism itineraries, able to tell the story of theater and cinema with the materials of the data lake. The activities will therefore consist of:
  • verticalisation and customisation of the developed cloud platform;
  • purchase and development of specific services to be integrated with the developed platform;

Smart Culture - IoT Cultural Sensors
Giving life to objects of cultural interest is possible with the application of IoT (Internet of Things) technologies, a term that defines all objects connected to the network that can acquire its own capacity for interaction, thanks to particular devices, plants or systems integrated with them. The use of IoT makes the selected objects smart objects, which have the ability to identify, connect, locate, process data and interact with the environment. Cultural objects will therefore be able to communicate information to the network or other mobile devices, such as smartphones, thanks to radio frequency identification labels or QR codes. Hypothesized sensors:
  • People counters
    The analysis of people flows allows you to optimize statistical analysis, promotional activities, sales, marketing and resource utilization, security, maintenance or scheduling of staff shifts. In this way it is possible to improve the quality of the service provided to the visitor.
  • Hygrometers - Temperatures - Barometric pressure - Sound
    The analysis of environmental data allows to optimize the management of activities aimed at the preservation of assets. In this way it is possible to improve the quality of the service for the protection of cultural assets.
  • Presence sensor
    The security of cultural assets requires advanced ICT functions, to meet the needs of institutions from the risk of possible theft of goods or damage. The presence of IoT sensors able to signal the removal and movement of artworks, can be integrated with existing security systems to prevent any criminal actions.

Smart interactive pathways
IoT technology can be used for simple solutions of interaction between user and object of cultural interest. This fulfils two distinct tasks: to increase quality of enjoyment and improve the offer. The user experience will be enriched by technologies such as QR Code (two-dimensional barcode readable by smartphone and usable as hypertext) and Beacon (devices which are able to communicate via Bluetooth). In this way, it will be possible to deepen different levels of information on an art piece, a monument or an archaeological site. At the same time, the IoT sensor system on the individual works of art makes it possible to identify the approach of a user and to communicate this information to a centralised system. In this way, it is possible to reconstruct the behaviour of visitors, stratify the data collected on them and, consequently, identify in a completely innovative way the possible relationships that visitors establish with individual artworks. This creates the information base for the creation of an advanced system of guides, able to offer visitors itineraries based not only on the system of knowledge of the individual user, but also on the (indirect) knowledge of the experiences and preferences of those who have already visited the museum.

ARCCA - ARchitettura della Conoscenza CAmpana

The Project ArCCa - ARchitettura della Conoscenza Campana, implemented by SCaBeC - Società Campana Beni Culturali, intends to support the experimentation of technologies to support the conservation, valorization and fruition of the cultural heritage of Campania. Research, development and innovation, in a “smart cities” idea, are the tools for the dissemination of models of integration and advanced technologies.

The Project contributes to enhance and disseminate the Campania Cultural System through a digital environment that allows description, digitization and new forms of online use, also promoting the development of emerging markets, with benefits for the regional administration, citizens and businesses in the area.

The information architecture is applied to the cultural heritage, one of the most characteristic areas of the territory of Campania, thus stimulating the strengthening of research infrastructures related both to the field of information and communication technologies and to the cultural heritage sector.

ArCCa is conceived as a management and information eco-system characterized by a distributed, service-oriented environment, able to support both cultural operators in the activities of management and curatorship of heritage, and users of cultural content through its output interfaces and integrated services available on the territory.

The main functionalities of the ArCCa Ecosystem of services are represented by:

  1. Cataloguing of heritage through an innovative system of integrated description of cultural assets
  2. Digitization of the heritage through the services of an integrated Digital Library system
  3. Use of the heritage through a network of portals and Apps dedicated to the dissemination of content in a multimodal and multi-level perspective
  4. Prediction and Organization through the processing of large volumes of data from different sources, aimed at improving the cultural offer (Data Tourism)
  5. Protection of heritage and places of conservation through continuous monitoring with IoT sensor systems
  6. Intelligent localization of assets through integrated services of Heritage Proximity
  7. Ontological-semantic indexing of content and management of searches in natural language written and spoken
  8. Enhancement of heritage through innovative technologies for the preparation and use of content in AR (Augmented Reality) and VR (Virtual Reality)

The areas of application and experimentation of the technologies developed by the project have been identified through a logic of choice focused on the differentiation of cultural contexts and its heritage, both by historical period - from archaeological to contemporary - and by type of asset - audio, video, images, objects of sacred art, paintings, sculptures, manuscripts, etc..

The first experimentation phase of the ArCCa Project therefore concerns:

MADREscenza2020 – “Fondazione Donnaregina per le arti contemporanee” manages the archives of the contemporary art in Campania It digitizes and interconnects assets from Archivio Lia Incutti Rumma, Archivio Amelio-Santamaria, Archivio Marina Vergiani, Archivio Fondazione Filiberto e Bianca Menna, Archivi Fondazione Morra, Archivio Fondazione Morra Greco, Archivio Fondazione Donnaregina per le arti contemporanee - Museo Madre e Archivio di Castel Sant'Elmo

Via Duomo, museums' road A peculiar territory for cultural contents aiming at the virtualization of the area and digitalization of the artistic heritage, that links the eight museums placed on via Duomo in Naples: Fondazione Donnaregina per le arti contemporanee - Museo Madre, Complesso Monumentale Donnaregina Museo Diocesano, Biblioteca e Complesso monumentale dei Girolamini, Museo del Tesoro di San Gennaro, Pio Monte della Misericordia, Complesso museale San Severo al Pendino, Museo Civico Gaetano Filangieri, ilCartastorie - Museo dell’Archivio Storico del Banco di Napoli

Music is a context of experimentation where the digitization program allows the creation of a digital sound fund accessible from the SoNa portal that virtually crosses all the musical cultures of the Campania Region, without hierarchies or divisions between cultured and popular music, between the written music and that oral tradition one. The institutions involved in the digitization program are: il Conservatorio San Pietro a Majella, il Teatro San Carlo, il Teatro de Popolo Trianon-Viviani, la Fondazione Bideri, together with other associations, individual collectors, musicians and scholars who make their collections available, in whole or in part. In addition, at the Teatro del Popolo Trianon Viviani you can enjoy in an immersive way in the Stanza delle Meraviglie the sound heritage, while in the Stanza della Memoria you can access the multimedia library

Archaeology is the thematic context of an activity of research and experimentation that, through the use of digital technology, aims to trace a virtual path on the different aspects of cultural forms of the communities of ancient Campania through times. Architectural terracottas, painted tomb slabs, sculptures, drawings and reliefs, entire portions of archaeological areas, will be photographed, cataloged and included in a system that re-establishes the link between the find and the place from which it comes, in order to make the data talk to each other and create countless possibilities for storytelling

Smart ArteCard is the action of dematerialization of Campania ArteCard, the pass to discover the places of culture in Campania and travel on the network of public transport included in the consortium UnicoCampania. Through the customization and the use of the Regional Sales System, the integration of the transport pass in digital format and the use of an innovative App for smartphones, Campania ArteCard becomes more and more a HUB of access to the knowledge of Campania's cultural heritage, helping the user in his visit, facilitating access and improving the quality of the experience of visiting Campania

The ARCCA project, approved and admitted to funding by the Campania Region, was implemented by Scabec (Società Campana dei Beni Culturali) under the POR FESR 2014 - 2020 Axis I and Axis II, Accordo di Programma Quadro Campania 2020 - APQ La cultura nella citta'. DGR 101 of 20.02.2018 and DGR 605 of 02.10.2018.

Biblio ARCCA - ARchitettura della Conoscenza CAmpana per Archivi e Biblioteche

The Region Campania acted a development, innovation and experimentation intervention in order to provide e-Government services -able to co-work- that were integrated and designed with citizens and enterprises. Moreover, the Region released integrated solutions for Smart Cities and Communities, aiming at developing innovative approaches in terms of organization, sharing, accessibility and cultural heritage management.

For this purpose, was delivered a specific action (DGR n. 67/2018) that wants to ensure the improvement of technological services through the digitalization of the archival and librarian patrimony of the territory, strengthening the application of the information technology to spread the e-culture among Campania’s people. Through the activation of services and application of digital accessibility and inclusion and the experimentation of innovative digital tools, the regional project Biblio-ArCCa foresees the preparation of the regional information architecture, that can be completely used online. The new tool is applied to one of the richest (in terms of number of resources) scope of archives and libraries owned by public and private bodies of the Region Campania.

The Regional platform for archives and libraries, integrated with some other cultural domains, was conceived as a true management and informational ecosystem. It is characterised by a distributed environment, service-oriented, able to support both cultural operators in their management and care tasks related to the artistic heritage, and the users of cultural contents through its output interface and online services.

With the expression of interest of "Digitalizzazione e conservazione del Patrimonio culturale di archivi e biblioteche della Regione Campania" (03/05/2018) the body “Direzione generale per le Politiche culturali e il Turismo” identified a number of archives and libraries whose heritage will be available online, thanks to the digitalization of documents and books of major relevance. In December 2018 the company Scabec S.p.A. was appointed to realise the project BiblioArcca - ARchitettura della Conoscenza CAmpana per Archivi e Biblioteche – that is perfectly integrated with the cultural informative system Move to cloud – digital ecosystem for the culture, and is an extension of the Project ARCCA - ARchitettura della Conoscenza in Campania for the digital ecosystem.
